You may have to work on a project such as an annual report, paper publication or a blog post from time to time. You may be confronted with piles of documents containing snore-inducing numbers but you have to present something that will shine up. In these occasions, you can rely on data visualization: applying charts or graphs to show information visually and impressively. Let's take line chart as an example.

What Is Line Chart

According to Wikipedia, a line chart or line graph is a type of chart which displays information as a series of data points called 'markers' connected by straight line segments. It is a perfect tool for showing trend visually over a period of time. From the position of markers, viewers can understand the difference almost instantly.

Design Elements of a Line Chart

When designing a line chart, there are typically four main factors that you can customize. These elements are the title, the legend, the data (sections/bars/points), and the parameters (axes, tick marks).

The chart title is often the first thing come to readers' eyes. It should accurately describe the topic of the line chart. It should be large enough to be easily readable, but not too large or too distracting. In other words, it should do its job and then get out of the way.

The legend is what describes the data - it's what makes your chart meaningful. Legends can be placed beneath the chart or on the right. The colors of the items within the legend should correspond to the data on the chart. Depending on different needs, the data can take many different forms. It can be 2D, 3D or textured for example.

The axes and tick marks assist readers figure out the actual number each marker represent. They should sort of fade into the background but be easy to read when needed.
