P&ID Introduction

A P&ID (or engineering flow drawing, EFD) is a type of process engineering drawing that describes all process design aspects of a plant. "Process Design" means all the stuff that makes up a plant, such as instruments, pipes and valves.

The purposes of creating P&IDs are: to indicate the instrument or control devices attached to the process and to present the control system architecture associated with the process.

How to Create P&ID

With an extensive collection of accurate, ready-to-use P&ID symbols and templates, you are able to make presentation-quality P&ID effortlessly, without prior experience needed. View a more detailed guide on how to create piping and instrumentation diagram.

1. On the FILE menu, point to New, point to Engineering or Industrial Automation, and then choose a diagram type.
2. From symbol libraries, drag and drop instrument shapes to the canvas.
3. Use pipeline shapes to connect major equipment. If necessary, use the floating action button to change the radius of pipelines.
4. Add other kinds of shapes such as valves. Click on the library title to open the library you need.
5. Resize shapes by dragging its green selection handles. Reposition shapes by selecting and dragging them. Recolor symbols through Fill or Theme tool.
6. Double click a shape to add text to it if there is an attached text box. Or use Text button to draw text boxes.
7. Save the file or export to other formats.
